Abstract

The effect of the thyroid status on the life span of the corpus luteum was investigated in the nonpregnant ewe and in the pseudopregnant rat. Treatment of ewes with either 480 or 720 mcg. of 3-5-3'-triiodothyronine initiated on either day 2 or day 11 of the cycle and continued until the next estrus significantly lengthened the estrous cycle by an average of 1.5 days. Thyroidectomy was without effect.

In the rat, daily injections of 17.5 mg. of 2-thiouracil from the first day of pseudopregnancy until the next estrus lengthened pseudopregnancy by an average of 1.6 days (P<0.05). Similarly, thyroidectomy lengthened pseudopregnancy by 2.3 days (P<0.01). Daily injections of either 8.7 or 17.4 mcg. of L-thyroxine were without effect.
