Abstract
Three procedures were compared which are reported to minimize artifactual ammonia formation when whole blood is analyzed for ammonia-N. Using jugular blood obtained from sheep, the borate buffer procedure of Reinhold and Chung resulted in the least formation of artifactual ammonia. All three procedures gave parallel results indicating that valid relative comparisons can be made with all three procedures. For routine laboratory determinations, the borate buffer procedure is the easiest to employ if the blood samples can be analyzed immediately after withdrawal.
