Effect of Varying Amounts of Forage Intake on Rumination1

J. G. Welch and A. M. Smith

University of Vermont, Burlington

Abstract

Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of varying amounts of hay intake upon subsequent rumination time in mature rams. Single meals of 1,000 gm. of hay produced 67% more rumination time than 500 gm. meals. Increasing single-meal size from 250 gm. to 1,000 gm. in 250 gm. increments produced a linear increase in rumination time during the 48 hr. following the test meal, from 291 to 590 minutes. Progressing from 250 gm. offerings of hay to 1,800 gm. in a continuous feeding experiment produced a curvilinear increase in rumination time with a maximum in the range between 500 to 600 min. per day. Rumination times were higher for corresponding weights of hay when fed as single meals to fasted sheep than when fed continuously.
