Raw Cracked Vs. Expanded Gelatinized Corn for Beef Cattle1

C. A. Mudd2 and T. W. Perry

Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana

Abstract

Three metabolism experiments and one feeding experiment were conducted to study the effect of gelatinization of corn upon its utilization by beef cattle. In two of the three metabolism studies, the substitution of gelatinized corn for raw corn as a major constituent of the diet resulted in a significant and linear depression in the digestibility of the nutrients.

Gelatinized corn decreased feed consumption and animal gains. In the feeding experiment, molar proportions of propionate and butyrate were significantly (P<.05) decreased, as the result of corn gelatinization. Oystershell and cochina shell produced similar results.
