Abstract
Unilateral ovariectomy was performed on Poland China and Yorkshire gilts at either 65 or 170 days of age. Treatment at 65 days resulted in increases in ovarian weights and in the incidence of follicles
1 mm. At 170 days treatment resulted in an increase in the ovarian weight, number of follicles 3 to 4 mm. and 5 to 6 mm. in diameter, the diameter of the largest follicle, the follicular fluid weight, and a decrease in the anterior pituitary gland weight.
The Yorkshire gilts at 72 days of age had heavier ovaries and heavier anterior pituitary glands with greater FSH and LH potencies than the Poland China gilts. Yorkshires had heavier ovaries at 177 days of age, more follicular fluid, heavier uteri and heavier anterior pituitary glands than the Poland Chinas; they had, however, fewer follicles 5 to 6 mm. in diameter and smaller diameters of the largest follicle. None of the Poland China gilts showed estrus; two of 14 control and five of 15 treated Yorkshires showed estrus. No corpora lutea were found in either breed.
