Abstract
The addition of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) or dehydrated alfalfa meal (DEHY) to high-urea diets significantly improved nitrogen retention in steers. Ruminal ammonia and blood urea levels were not affected by treatment in any of the experiments. A shift in the concentrations of individual or total rumen VFA's was not observed as a result of adding DDGS to the basal diet; whereas, the addition of DEHY to a basal diet significantly increased acetic acid (P<.01) and total VFA's (P<.05) in the rumen contents of steers. Plasma free amino acid concentrations were not affected by DDGS but were less when fed DEHY.
