Abstract
Forty-four lambs were used in two experiments to determine the effect of added dietary nitrate and sulfur in a complete diet on nitrogen balance, sulfur balance and certain carcass characteristics of lambs. Lambs gained adequately and retained more nitrogen (P<.05 experiment II) when nitrate or nitrate and sulfur were added to the diet. Addition of elemental sulfur to raise the inorganic sulfur equivalent of the diet to 0.5% appeared to increase the utilization of added nitrate-nitrogen by the growing-fattening lamb.
