Abstract
In an experiment on 15 Kumaoni bullocks, the effect of water washing, lime treatment, or supplementing paddy straw rations with lime or calcium carbonate was studied. The digestion coefficients of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract and total carbohydrates were not significantly affected. More protein was ingested from lime-treated paddy straw, and nitrogen balance was significantly higher. In spite of a high calcium ingestion from the lime-treated straw, the retention of calcium remained unaffected. The water washing, lime supplementation and calcium carbonate supplementation improved calcium retention while phosphorus balances were not affected. It is concluded that water washing, lime or calcium carbonate supplementation are promising methods to combat negative calcium balances encountered frequently on paddy straw rations, but lime treatment of the straw is not suitable.
