Effects of Feeding Carbadox1 upon the Growth and Performance of Young Pigs

Abstract

Five growth trials were conducted involving a total of 552 weanling pigs averaging approximately 8 kg. initially. Trials were conducted over 28 or 42-day periods using a randomized block design involving either three or four replicate pens of eight pigs per pen in each treatment. Levels of carbadox ranging from 18.3 to 110 mg. per kg. of complete ration were fed, and effects upon performance were compared with non-treated control pigs and pigs fed a combination (CSP) of chlortetracycline, sulfamethazine and procaine penicillin at 275 mg. per kg. of ration. All levels of carbadox increased average daily gains, increased average daily feed consumption and lowered feed:gain ratios when compared to controls. Many of these differences in mean performance values were statistically significant. Levels of carbadox ranging from 27.5 to 55 mg. per kg. of ration supported pig performance which was quite comparable to that obtained from CSP at the 275 mg. per kg. level. No interactions of treatments with initial weight or sex were noted in any of these trials.
