Effect of Ration on Liver Oxidation of Racemic Lactate and of Thiamine on Blood Lactate Clearance1

T. L. Huber2

University of Illinois, Urbana

Abstract

The effect of hay and high-grain rations on liver oxidation of L and racemic lactic acid and of thiamine hydrochloride on blood lactate clearance rate was studied in sheep. Ration composition had no effect on the oxidation of either the L or racemic lactic acid. The L-isomer was oxidized at a significantly greater rate than the racemic mixture. Thiamine hydrochloride was not effective in increasing blood lactate clearance and acidosis decreased blood clearance rates.
