Environment-Induced Adrenocortical Lipid in "Stress-Susceptible" Pigs1

Purdue University, Lafayette, Inidiana

Abstract

The incidence of large lipid masses was observed in the zona reticularis of the adrenal glands of pigs (known to be "stress susceptible") reared in psychrometric chambers. The lipid masses were induced by fluctuating environmental temperatures (29 and 13° C. or 32 and 21° C.) or by low environmental humidity (17% or 21 to 24% R.H.). These adrenal alterations may be related to the stress susceptibility of the experimental animals and to the rapid anaerobic glycolysis that occurs in their striated muscles.
