Abstract
Plastic spirals were inserted by surgery into one uterine horn of 36 ewes and sham operations were performed on 24 control ewes. Six ewes of each group were bilaterally ovariectomized. After 2 mo., ovariectomized ewes were killed randomly and cycling animals were killed on the day of estrus, day 3 or day 8 of the cycle. Hexosamine and uronic acid concentrations in the uterine endometrium were determined chemically as measures of mucopolysaccharide (MPS) content.
In control animals, MPS concentrations were lowered after bilateral ovariectomy and were higher in estrous ewes than in day 3 or day8 luteal phase ewes.
In ewes with a spiral in one uterine horn, MPS concentrations were higher in the horn containing the spiral than in the opposite horn in ewes of each endocrine group. Relative MPS values from control ewes and from each horn of ewes with a spiral in one horn suggested that IUDs caused a localized increase in MPS concentrations in day 3 and day 8 luteal phase ewes, but caused a depression in MPS concentrations in the horn opposite to that containing the spiral in estrous and perhaps in ovariectomized ewes.
