Effect of two Levels of Feeding on Ovarian Activity, Embryo Survival and Ovarian Compensatory Hypertrophy in the Rabbit1

Abstract

Rabbits were fed either 99 (low-plane) or 142 gm. (high-plane) of feed per day in these experiments.In experiment 1, unilateral ovariectomy was studied in non-mated rabbits on the two feed levels. The left ovary was removed, and these animals were killed 7 days later. Comparable controls were killed at the beginning and end of this 7-day period. Feed level had no significant effect on ovarian activity in the intact animals,but following unilateral ovariectomy the ovaries of rabbits on the high feed level had a greater number of large follicles (dia.{not greater than or equal to}1 mm.) than those on the low level. In experiment 2, rabbits on the two feed levels were mated and then killed on the 12th day of gestation. The low feed level decreased the proportion of animals that ovulated after mating but decreased the ovulation rate of the ovulating-does only slightly.Feed level had no significant effect on the number of live embryos or embryonic survival.
