Factors Related to the Utilization of Urea vs. Protein-Nitrogen Supplemented Diets by the Ruminant1

R. R. Freitag2, W. H. Smith and W. M. Beeson

Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana

Abstract

Of the factors studied in trial 1, only free plasma amino acids were affected by the substitution of urea for soybean meal in the diet. However, the expected decrease in the nitrogen balance due to feeding the urea diet compared to soybean meal and urea supplemented diets was not observed.

In trial 2 average daily gain, free plasma amino acids, ruminal ammonia, ruminal volatile fatty acids and plasma urea nitrogen were all affected by substituting urea for soybean meal in the diet. Both reducing the crude protein from 11% to 7% in either supplemented diet and substituting urea for soybean meal caused a reduction in average daily gain. However, the changes in free plasma amino acids, volatile fatty acids and plasma urea nitrogen did not follow the reduction in average daily gain.
