Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station2, >Columbia

Abstract

The corpora lutea present in the ovaries of 30 gilts at 3 days after mating were marked with charcoal or India ink. The animals were slaughtered on day 40 of the gestation period and counts were made of marked and unmarked corpora lutea. Four of 339 corpora lutea marked at laparotomy were not detected on the 40th day of gestation. Of a total of 343 corpora lutea present at the time of slaughter, 2.3% were unmarked. In this study, the number of corpora lutea present on the 40th day of pregnancy provided a useful estimation of ovulation rate at time of breeding with a minimal error.
