Report of the Committee on International Biological Program of the American Society of Animal Science

G. K. Davis, A. D. Tillman and M. C. Bell, Chairman

Abstract

THE International Biological Program (IBP) has been developed as a result of biologists' interest in promoting greater understanding and cooperation in our areas of interest patterned after the successful International Geophysical Year (IGY). Early discussions on IBP were initiated in 1961 and progress has been summarized in the American Society of Animal Science (A.S.A.S.) IBP Committee reports published in the August 1965 and August 1966 issues of the Journal of Animal Science. In addition, all members of the ASAS were mailed a copy of "Program Statement of the Subcommittee on Use and Management of Biological Resources, U.S. National Committee for the IBP" dated January 1967.

Of particular interest to those in animal nutrition are those areas which have been selected as stated in IBP News No. 8. These areas from the working group on human and animal nutrition include:

  1. Novel foods for farm animals including the development of new sources, with particular emphasis on fractions rich in proteins with testing for safety, nutritional value and acceptability.
