Abstract

Sterile saline solution or a suspension of E. coli was injected into the uterine lumen or broad ligament of 27 ewes on the day following estrus. Injections were made into a ligated uterine horn on the side of an ovary containing an ovulation point or into the broad ligament around the base of an ovary containing an ovulation point. Ewes were killed 6 days later. Corpus luteum weights averaged 94 mg. in ewes with infection in the uterine lumen, and approximately 500 mg. in ewes with infection in the broad ligament or with saline injections in the uterine lumen or in the broad ligament.
