Abstract
Unsupplemented rations composed of feeds purchased from local suppliers in Fargo, North Dakota, had insufficient iodine to meet needs of pregnant ewes, as judged by the thyroid physiology of the newborn lambs. Allowing the ewes free access to salt containing 0.007% iodine as diiodosalicylic acid did not prevent the symptoms of iodine deficiency; however, access to salt containing 0.007% iodine as KI did prevent the deficiency symptoms. This confirms the low availability of iodine fed to ruminants as diiodosalicylic acid.
