Pre-Intestinal Destruction of Vitamin A by Ruminants Fed Nitrate1

G. E. Mitchell, Jr., C. O. Little and B. W. Hayes

University of Kentucky, Lexington

Abstract

Pre-intestinal destruction of vitamin A was studied in steers and wethers fed high-roughage rations with and without 1% added potassium nitrate. Destruction was estimated by comparing administered ratios of chromic oxide and vitamin A with ratios in samples taken from permanent abomasal fistulas 24 hr. after treatment. Feeding potassium nitrate did not significantly alter apparent pre-intestinal destruction of vitamin A.
