Lipid and Dry Weight of Ejaculated, Epididymal and Post-Castrate Semen from Boars1

Abstract

Ten ejaculates of semen were collected from each of 10 Yorkshire boars and several chemical and physical characteristics determined on each ejaculate. Six days after the 10th ejaculate was collected, the boars were castrated and measurements made on the contents of the cauda epididymis. Following castration, collections were continued from the boars that would mount the dummy and ejaculate. This material was also analyzed. When the animals refused to mount they were injected with testosterone and one ejaculate was collected 3 days later and analyzed.

The gel, seminal plasma and ejaculated spermatozoa of the boar contained 0.29, 0.36 and 10.2% lipid, respectively. In comparison to ejaculated spermatozoa, epididymal spermatozoa had a lower DW and a higher lipid content. Castration resulted in a large decrease in volume of seminal "plasma", but gel was not greatly affected. There was a relatively large over-all decrease in DW and lesser decreases in lipid content of post-operative semen. All boars responded to testosterone treatment. The variation in the DW and lipid content was quite large; consequently, no clear conclusion could be drawn with respect to the influence of testosterone therapy.
