Steam Pressure Processing and Pelleting of Barley for Growing-Finishing Swine

H. F. Hintz and W. N. Garrett1

University of California, Davis

Abstract

Forty-eight pigs were used in two trials to study the effect of steam pressure processing and pelleting on the nutritive value of barley. Processing barley at 0.14 kg./cm.2 for 1.5 min. did not significantly influence rate of gain or feed conversion. Processing at 0.56 kg./cm.2 decreased intake and rate of gain. Pelleting barley increased rate of gain and feed intake and, apparently, improved feed conversion. There were no interactions between processing methods used and pelleting.
