Abstract
A study of somatic peridiploid and polyploid cell frequencies was conducted using cultured leucocytes from inbred Hereford, linecross Hereford, purebred Hereford and crossbred beef bulls. The inbreds and linecrosses were sired by seven different males, each a representative of an inbred line.
The over-all frequency of peridiploid cells observed was 16.6% and non-diploid, euploid cells were found with a frequency of 7.2%.
No significant differences were found among various groupings of data with regard to total peridiploid cell numbers. However, significant differences among progeny groups in the frequencies of hypo- and hyperdiploid cells were observed. These differences were larger among the inbred than among the linecross progenies. Furthermore, among more intensely inbred animals, a shift in the array of peridiploid cells toward higher hypodiploid frequencies was found to be significant. These results are indicative of a hereditary influence on the type of mitotic aberrations occurring.
A wide range of individual variation was noted for polyploid cell incidence. No sire line differences in polyploid cell frequency were found when inbred and linecross progeny were pooled; but, when data from only inbred sons were used, differences among sire lines approached significant levels.
