Abstract
Several trials were conducted to study the effect of level of alfalfa soilage consumption upon bloating patterns in crossbred wether lambs. In two trials a direct linear relationship appeared between the afternoon feed intake and severity and frequency of bloat. In all trials lambs bloated significantly more in the afternoon, regardless of the level of soilage consumed. The importance of the level of afternoon intake was further shown in trials with different combinations of high and low intake. The treatment combinations, referring to the level of intake in the morning and afternoon, respectively, were low-low, low-high, high-low and high-high. In both trials, lambs on high-high and low-high bloated more than those of the other two treatments. Correlation coefficients indicated a relationship between feed intake, particularly in the afternoon, and the severity of bloat.
