Introduction to Discussion

F. H. Bronson

Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine

Abstract

Dr. Bruce is to be commended, both for her highly original research and for an excellent review of socio-reproductive responses mediated through olfaction. She has emphasized, in particular, the important role of olfactory stimuli in the normal regulation of both the estrous cycle and the process of implantation in laboratory mice. For my part in this discussion I would like to present some conclusions of an experiment which Dr. Marsden and I have just completed, conclusions that I hope will offer further clarification of the relationship between olfaction and the rodent estrous cycle.

We were interested in the effects of anosmia on the synchrony of estrus which normally occurs following monogamous pairing of deer-mice. As background, deer mouse females were held one or ten per cage for 3 weeks before individual pairing with a male. Half of the crowded females were anosmic; half were sham-operated. All isolated females were intact.
