Introduction to Discussion

L. E. Casida

University of Wisconsin, Madison

Abstract

Our reviewer has just set forth the results of numerous experiments conducted in his laboratory on the effects of protein deficiency on the endocrine glands and on certain end organs involved in reproduction, as well as on some aspects of pregnancy. He is to be complimented on this work and the American Society of Animal Science, through this symposium on reproduction, should profit by having the contact with Dr. Leathern.

The review has been marked by the absence of consideration of one particular facet of the research area. Only in passing did the reviewer even mention the effect of diet on the hypothalamus. Undoubtedly this reflects the state of our knowledge of that relationship. I have recently been privileged to examine a manuscript of the late Sir John Hammond that seems to me to be pertinent to our discussion.
