Introduction to Discussion

M. T. Clegg

Department of Animal Husbandry, University of California, Davis

Abstract

To be invited to discuss Dr. Goy's paper is indeed an honor. I hope I can properly convey my deep admiration to him and his colleagues at Oregon for their pioneering work in studies of the effects of hormones on the developing brain, particularly as it applies to sexual behavior.

I am struck by the similarity of the morphological, physiological and behavioral changes induced by prenatal or neonatal androgen injections in the female mammal. Clearly, from morphological evidence androgen is capable of altering the development of a variety of structures ranging from the reproductive tract to the brain. One wonders, however, whether the inhibition of the later development of pituitary cyclical activity in the female is associated with inhibition of comparable areas in the central nervous system controlling sexual behavior.

Some recent data may have a bearing on this question and I am sure Dr. Goy will wish to speculate further.
