Abstract
NeP values of a basal ration and two test feeds, alfalfa hay and rolled barley, were calculated by using the increment method from experiments with growing-fattening beef steers and lactating dairy cattle. Both types of cattle received the same rations fed in the same manner. The NEP values of the feed increments in megcal. per kg. for beef and dairy cattle were, respectively, 0.80 and 0.88 for the basal ration, 0.58 and 0.64 for alfalfa hay, and 1.22 and 1.57 for rolled barley. Mean relative NEP values of the feed increments for beef cattle were 86% of that for dairy cattle.
The mean relative efficiency of feed utilization by beef steers, measured as yield of NEP per unit of feed intake, was 49% of that for dairy cattle. When calculated for amount of feed above maintenance, the mean relative partial efficiency by beef cattle was 57% of that for dairy cattle.
