Effect of Dietary Chemotherapeutics on the Performance and Fecal Flora of Baby Pigs1

Abstract

One hundred twenty baby pigs were used to investigate the effects of chemotherapeutics on rate of gain, feed efficiency and fecal flora populations. In experiment 1 pigs fed diets supplemented with chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, penicillin and streptomycin gained weight more rapidly on less feed per unit of gain and had lower counts of lactobacilli, total aerobes, total anaerobes and streptococci, as compared with those fed the control diet. In experiment 2 animals fed diets supplemented with copper sulfate gained more rapidly than controls and also had lower counts of lactobacilli, total aerobes and total anaerobes. Pigs fed diets supplemented with bacitracin or 3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid grew slower than the controls and had higher counts of lactobacilli, total anaerobes and streptococci. In general, there was an apparent inverse relationship between the rate and efficiency of body weight gains and the total counts of lactobacilli, streptococci, total aerobes and total anaerobes.
