Abstract
An investigation was undertaken to determine the relationship of acid and alkaline phophatase activity of the endometrium, embryos, chorionic fluid and corpora lutea with early embryonic survival in gilts. Tissues were taken at 25 days postbreeding from gilts previously fed diets of varying energy levels.
Statistical analyses did not reveal any clear relationship between the enzyme activities and accompanying reproductive performance when the effect of diet was not considered. Numerous significant correlations were found, however, within the treatment groups. This suggests that dietary energy level may exert its effect on embryo survival, either directly or indirectly, through phosphatase enzymes found in the reproductive tissues. The precise role through which energy level affects these findings must await further investigation.
