Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana
Abstract
The need for rapid expansion has placed a great burden and a great responsibility upon universities. It has been necessary for us to examine our original purpose and to attempt to meet many new demands. The role of the university in the mid-twentieth century has been the subject of a continuing series of studies by a great variety of individuals, groups, committees and commissions, teachers, scientists, administrators, diplomats, bureaucrats and miscellaneous experts beyond description. Needless to say, there is far from complete unanimity of agreement as to what the American university is or should be.
1 Presented at the General Session, 57th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Animal Science, East Lansing, Michigan.
2 Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, Purdue University.
