Effects of Corn, Wheat, Oats and Alfalfa Leaf Meal on the Development of Gastric Ulcers in Swine1, 2, 3,

Abstract

The effects of corn, oats, wheat and alfalfa leaf meal on the development of ulcers in swine were studied in two experiments. Feeding alfalfa leaf meal as 5% of a wheat-oat ration or as 5% of a corn ration had no effect on the prevalence of stomach lesions in swine.

Rations containing wheat and oats, corn and oats or oats as the only grains resulted in fewer stomach lesions. The ration containing 85% oats produced all normal stomachs, while all stomachs from pigs fed 76% corn showed abnormalities, including 53% with erosions or ulcers.

A less marked but significant (P<.01) beneficial effect resulted when a ration containing 90% wheat was compared with one containing corn.
