Comparison of Responses to Various Forages by Sheep, Rabbits and Heifers1

Abstract

Relative DM intake, percent digestible DM, DMNVI and body weight gains of rabbits were not significantly related to similar values determined in sheep. Weight gain of rabbits appeared to be related to percent DM digestibility of the forages rather than DM intake, while the reverse was found for sheep. CWC were negatively related to DM intake, but seemed to have little effect on DM digestion coefficients as determined by sheep. Dry matter intake by rabbits did not appear to be affected by CWC, but was negatively correlated with DM digestion coefficients. Although there was a significant correlation (0.59) between DM intakes of wethers and heifers, there appeared to be some discrepancy between intake of some forages by sheep and heifers.
