Evaluation of the Profilometer for Detection of Hereford Bulls Heterozygous for the Snorter Dwarf Gene1

Abstract

Progeny test results on 40 horned Hereford bulls, on which genotype predictions were made on the basis of median head profile readings, indicated that the profilometer does have predictive value for distinguishing between heterozygous and homozygous normal individuals with respect to the Snorter dwarf gene. The product moment correlation between predicted and actual genotype was 0.36, which is significant (P<.05). However, the accuracy is too low to be useful in identifying genotypes for this condition.
