Abstract
Four experiments were conducted with growing lambs to determine the structural requirements for the growth and nitrogen balance stimulation effects of estrogens in ruminants. The administration of certain diphenylethylenes indicates that estrogenic activity related to hydroxyl group substitution is not a requirement for this response. Transstilbene appears to give a similar response and is essentially non-estrogenic. The growth response is tentatively assigned to the presence of two properly spaced phenyl groups.
