Abstract
The total length, maximum width, base width, and the planimetric area of the projected image of 720 bull spermatozoa were measured. From the linear measures, the estimated area was calculated by the use of three formulas frequently used for the purpose of determining nuclear areas in cytophotometric analyses of nuclear constituents. The test of the accuracy and precision of the formula-calculated areas was the correlation and regression of these values on the areas measured by the planimeter. Of the single linear measurements maximum width was the most closely associated with area. The formula-calculated areas were all more closely correlated with the planimeter measured area than any single linear measurement. Of these, a formula proposed by van Duijn was the most accurate and precise, the two being correlated 0.993, and the regression coefficient, 0.997, introducing the least possible bias.
