A Technique for Reciprocal Embryo Transfer in Swine1

C. K. Vincent, O. W. Robison and L. C. Ulberg

North Carolina State College, Raleigh

Abstract

A technique is described for swine whereby the donor of embryos can also serve as a recipient. In 25 females 82.4% of the embryos (ova) were recovered from the oviducts 46 to 75 hr. after onset of estrus, whereas after 75 hr. (two females) embryos were recovered only from the uterus. Of 219 transferred ova recovered from litters with at least one cleaved ovum, 101 (46%) were accounted for by embryos 24 to 30 days after mating. Pregnancy occurred in 12 recipients in which 101 of 138 (73%) transferred embryos survived.
