Genetic Variation in the Gestation Period of Swine1

D. F. Cox

Iowa State University, Ames

Abstract

The gestation periods taken from 1450 records on purebred Duroc and Hampshire sows maintained in a single herd were studied. The distribution of the gestation period was leptokurtic. The gestation period in the Durocs was 0.5 day longer than in the Hampshires. The mean was 113.5 days. The heritability of the gestation period was 0.30 and repeatability, 0.42, based on an analysis of full sisters within the two breeds.
