Abstract
Twelve steer calves and six 2-year-old steers were fed for 91 days to determine the effect of fluorine from different sources on feed consumption, feed conversion, average daily gains and fluorine deposition in the bone. Soft phosphate and calcium fluoride supplied 134 ppm additional fluorine and sodium fluoride supplied 67 ppm. Feed consumption, average daily gains and feed conversion were not influenced by source of fluorine. Significantly more fluorine was found in the metacarpals of those steers consuming soft phosphate than in the bones of the steers consuming one-half the equivalent level of supplemental fluorine as sodium fluoride. Also significantly more fluorine was deposited from 67 ppm fluorine as sodium fluoride than from 134 ppm fluorine as calcium fluoride. Treatment effects were similar when the data were compared on the basis of either fluorine concentration or total fluorine in the metacarpal. The proximal

measured sections of the metacarpal were more sensitive indicators of fluorine deposition than the center or shaft section.
