Abstract
Addition of a B. subtilis enzyme preparation to a western barley ration increased rumen amylase activity. Beta-glucanase activity also was augmented by addition of the enzyme preparation to rations containing steam rolled barley or oats as the principal cereal grain. The area of the rumen from which rumen digesta samples are withdrawn for enzyme assays is a variable which should be considered in performing such assays. Amylase and beta-glucanase activity was not constant in the rumen digesta and was highest in samples obtained soon after feeding. Barley beta-glucanase activity was present in rumen fluid obtained when a fistulated animal was fed only alfalfa hay. Whether the beta-glucan degradation resulted from the action of microbial beta-glucanases or cellulases in the rumen digesta or plant enzyme sources was not resolved.
