Abstract
The effect of a streptomycin-penicillin mixture upon gas production by rumen organisms in vitro was determined manometrically. Antibiotic at two levels and a nutrient solution were employed in various combinations, adding them to suspensions of organisms simultaneously or individually at various time intervals. When antibiotic was added to the organisms at the same time as the nutrient solution there was a greater decrease in gas production than when it was added 100 minutes after the addition of the nutrient solution. On the other hand, when nutrients were added 100 minutes after the addition of antibiotic, there was significantly less gas production than was observed when they were added to the rumen organisms simultaneously. The inhibition of gas production was further increased when nutrients were added 3 hours after the addition of antibiotic. Incubation periods greater than 3 hours did not further increase the inhibition.
