Heritabilities of and Correlations between Lamb Birth Weight and 140-Day Weight

R. L. Butcher, R. S. Dunbar, Jr. and J. A. Welch

West Virginia University, Morgantown1

Abstract

Genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated from data collected on purebred flocks of Corriedales, Hampshires, Shropshires and Southdowns during the years 1947 through 1958.

Heritability estimates of birth weight, based on all the breeds were:

  1. –.14±0.10 when computed by intrasire regression,
  2. –.14±0.09 when computed by intrasire multiple regression,
  3. 0.10 when computed by paternal-sib correlation, and
  4. –.17 when computed by intra-sire correlation.

Estimates of the heritability of weight at 140 days of age were essentially zero whether computed by intra-sire regression, paternal-sib correlation or intra-sire regression.

The phenotypic correlation between birth weight and weight at 140 days of age was 0.32.
