Breed and Sex Effects on the Relationship between Weight and Fatness Measured at a Constant Age in Swine1

D. F. Cox

Iowa State University, Ames

Abstract

The relation between the thickness of fat measured at the shoulder, back and loin of live pigs and 154-day weight was studied in 7642 pigs of both sexes from the Duroc and Hampshire breeds. The approximate distribution of the fat over the body as indicated by the depth at the three sites remained proportionally the same for weights from 125 to 225 lb. Breed and sex differences in the depth of fat, the relation of fatness and weight and the proportion of fat at the three sites were found. The regression coefficients for the regression of the average of three fat measures on individual body weight were 0.00745 and 0.00700 for Duroc males and females and 0.00571 and 0.00562 for Hampshire males and females, respectively.
