Use of Esophageal-Fistula Cannulae for Collecting Forage Samples from Both Sheep and Cattle Grazing in Common

Abstract

Esophageal-fistula cannulae were used successfully to determine the nutrient intake of sheep and cattle grazing in common on mountainous summer range in northern Utah.

Forage samples for chemical analysis were collected from eight fistulated sheep and two fistulated steers. Fecal samples were collected by the grab method and digestibility was determined by the lignin-ratio technique.

Cellulose and gross energy in the diets had higher digestibility by cattle than sheep. As a result, the digestible energy and total digestible nutrients were higher in the forage consumed by cattle compared to forage consumed by sheep. Percent total protein and phosphorus was higher in the forage selected by sheep than by cattle.
