Pantothenic Acid Requirement of Swine for Reproduction

Abstract

The dietary pantothenic acid requirement of female swine for reproduction was investigated in a series of three trials. Pantothenic acid levels of 3.2, 4.7, 6.2 and 7.7 mg. per lb. of total diet were studied in two trials in which a relatively complex natural diet of yellow corn, alfalfa meal, soybean meal, fish-meal, and tankage was used. In a third trial pantothenic acid levels of 2.0, 3.7 and 5.4 mg. per lb. were used with a simpler diet based on yellow corn, corn oil meal, and tankage. Evaluation criteria were the performance of the sows during the growth and reproductive phases of their life cycles, and the weight and viability of their litters. On this basis it is concluded that a minimum of 5.4 mg. of pantothenic acid per lb. is required in diets of swine for reproduction.
