Evaluation of Iodine Sources for Livestock Salt1

A. Cornwell Shuman and Dick P. Townsend2

Shuman Chemical Laboratory, Inc., Battle Ground, Indiana

Abstract

Laboratory and field tests on four commercially used iodine sources for trace-mineralized salt conclusively show that 3,5-diiodosalicylic acid is the only one proving a source of iodine which is constantly in the surface and obtained by the animal consuming the salt in a normal manner. Potassium iodide and calcium iodate are rapidly lost from the surface layer when exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
