Abstract
Twenty-two Hereford cattle, which showed some signs of bloat in a 2-day preliminary grazing period, were divided into three herds. Herds A and B (eight animals each) alternately grazed the Culver and Vernal pastures, while Herd C (six animals) grazed only the Vernal pasture during the six 4-day experimental periods. Samples of the forages were collected each afternoon for the first four experimental periods.
The inhibitory effect of forage fractions on tissue respiratory in vitro was compared with the bloat index of the forage and data show no evidence of a correlation between the two.
Biological and chemical properties of the purified respiratory inhibitor(s) from Culver and Vernal alfalfa differed somewhat from those of Ranger alfalfa and of Ladino clover.
