Comparative Digestive Powers of Hereford and Brahman Cattle1

Abstract

In 20 digestion trials, the digestive efficiences of representatives of Bos indicus (Brahman) and Bos taurus (Hereford) species were compared on several diets in an environment intermediate to that in which either species originated. In general, Brahman heifers were more efficient in digesting all nutritional components except ether extract. These species differences were significant only for crude protein.

A comparison of trials conducted in mid-winter and mid-summer reveals no significant seasonal differences in apparent digestibility of nutrients for either species. However, both species digested crude protein in low protein diets best in winter, and crude protein in better quality diets best in summer.

On low protein diets, Brahmans digested more protein and consumed more dry matter than Herefords. These traits may partially explain the superior digestion of the Brahmans on low protein diets.
