Blood Volume of Brahman and Hereford Cattle as Measured by Injected Radioiodinated Bovine Serum Albumin1

J. R. Howes2, J. F. Hentges, Jr. and J. P. Feaster

Florida Agricultural Experiment Station,3 Gainesville

Abstract

Plasma, erythrocyte, and total blood volumes calculated on a body weight basis were determined for 24 Hereford and 24 Brahman cattle. Half of the animals received a nutrient allowance recommended by the National Research Council, while the remainder received a similar allowance less 50% of crude protein. Half of each breed group were 2-year-old virgin heifers and half were 4-year-old cows. Brahmans had a significantly (P<.01) higher plasma, erythrocyte, and whole blood volume than Herefords. Four-year-old cows in each breed had larger (P<.01) volumes of plasma, erythrocytes and whole blood than 2-year-old heifers. There were no significant differences due to diet or season.
