Effect of Dietary Protein on Fructose, Citric Acid and 5-Nucleotidase Activity in the Semen of Bulls1,2,3,

Abstract

Two experiments have been conducted with beef bulls to determine the effect of dietary protein and TDN on the concentration of fructose, citric acid and 5-nucleotidase activity in their semen. The dietary study was started when the bulls were about 8 months old. The control bulls were fed 14.3% and 13.8% and the deprived bulls 1.35% and 1.62% protein diets, respectively. The average pounds of TDN consumed per day per 100 lb. body weight during the time of chemical analysis of the semen was 1.40 and 1.30 for control bulls and 0.87 and 0.79 for deprived bulls respectively. In the first study the deprived bulls were dropped to the low protein level in three stages. Fructose, citric acid and S-nucleotidase activity were determined in the semen of the first experiment 7 to 12 months after the dietary study began, while in the second study the determinations were made between 2 and 6 months after the study began. In both experiments the fructose and citric acid concentrations and 5-nucleotidase activity were less (P<.01) in the semen of the protein-deprived bulls.
