Abstract
An investigation was made on the use of biuret by ruminants. It was found that biuret promoted slightly, but not significantly lower growth and feed efficiency than urea, in a study with growing Holstein heifers. Biuret also appeared to be slightly inferior to urea in the production of FCM with Holstein cows. Biuret supplemented rations exhibited lower nitrogen retention when compared to urea rations for Holstein bull calves.
In spite of the slightly lower average response of biuret, it was noted that the biuret supplemented rations became more efficient with time. An improvement was noted for both the biuret and urea rations in the growth rate of Holstein heifers after 3 weeks feeding, while there was an improvement after 2 to 3 weeks for the NPN rations in the lactation study. It was also found that there was an increased post prandial ruminal ammonia concentration on the biuret ration up to 5 weeks, indicating an increased hydrolysis of the biuret with time.
